George Shaw: catalogue
Produced to document a homecoming exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry (in the same year George was nominated for the Turner Prize); A Midland Education catalogues George's collection of pre art school work. The catalogue's title and cover reference a Coventry store called The Midland Educational. Known colloquially as The Midland Ed, the store was a supplier of books, paints and craft materials to schools and budding artists. A visitor in the 1980s would have found a ‘Grace Brothers’ style art department, where staff in overalls dispensed paints and exercise books in crisp white paper bags. The Midland Ed is sadly long gone, but the original quill and ink pot logo was fondly recreated for this publication.
